Quiet Days of Reflection
Quiet Days are held on one Monday a month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The day opens with prayer. The morning session is followed by an hour and a half reflection time. Reflection time is a private, silent time for prayer, journaling, reflecting, or reading. Feel welcome to use our chapel, sitting rooms, library, or explore our beautiful grounds overlooking Lake Gilbraith, visit the Stations of the Cross, walk the indoor or outdoor labyrinths, or enjoy peaceful quiet in our Prayer Garden. Morning reflection time is followed by the noon main meal. The afternoon session includes sharing and closing prayer.
Participants are welcome to continue in personal reflection until 5:00 p.m.
Fee is $25 and includes a large noon meal. (Fee is non-refundable, non-transferable..)

The Book of Hebrews: A Christian Letter Defining the Ancient Scriptures

This quiet day is about discerning how the Book of Hebrews summarizes the essence of the Hebrew scriptures applying its wisdom to our Christian faith in Jesus the Christ.
Facilitator: Fr. Jerry Schweitzer is a priest from the Diocese of Gary, Indiana. He is pastor of St. Mary’s in Otis, Sacred Heart in Wanatah, and St. Martin in LaCrosse. He is a teacher of sacred scripture, lecturer, and mission director. He has led many Quiet Day of Reflections and retreats at Lindenwood.

Themes that will be covered are mourning our losses, discerning the presence, inviting the stranger, entering into communion, andgoing on a mission. The day will include a video featuring Henri Nouwen, music that reflects the different themes, and time to reflect on some of these questions: What are your losses and how do you mourn them? What is your unique role to take in God’s story? How do you bring the mercy to others that you receive at Eucharist? The day will include presentations, reflection time, and prayer.
Facilitator: Sr. Joetta Huelsmann, PHJC , is in her fifth year as Director of John XXIII Retreat Center in Hartford City, Indiana. She has been directing retreats both nationally and internationally for over 25 years.

Writing Ways: Exploring: Writing as a Threshold to Spirit

Participants will explore how the writing process and the written word can be a graced experience. Sessions will focus on what professional writers have noted about writing as a healing, meaning-making, awe-filled, prayerful experience. Participants will also have time for their own writing in various genres with prompts provided to help get the ink flowing.
Facilitator: Sr. Judith Diltz, PHJC is a writer and a college writing instructor. She promises to leave her red pen at home and to serve as a guide so that all might find writing a threshold into the richness of their own spirit!

Breath and Sound

Explore the effect of breath and sound on the human body, mind, and spirit. Participants will experience ways to clear the mind, relax the body, and bring focus and clarity to their lives by practicing breathing exercises, toning, and rhythm.
Facilitator: Rev. Dr. Sam Boys is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Ancilla College. Sam holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in Spiritual Direction, a Masters of Divinity, a Bachelor of Arts, and is a graduate of the EarthSong Sound Mystery School.

The Lord Is With You: Eucharist Throughout the Day

In his farewell address, Jesus, said, “I will be with you always!” St. Paul refers to the early followers of Jesus as the Body of Christ, with Christ as the Head. How do we live as Eucharist with and to one another? We will begin the day with Mass, with the homily as the opening conference. The other conferences will include New Testament references, so a Bible will be helpful.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

Explore your personal connection with this beloved parable with the help of Rembrandt’s painting, “Return of the Prodigal,” and Henri Nouwen’s book, “Return of the Prodigal Son.” Carefully examine the scriptural account, meditatively examine each character in the story and the painting. See how this par-able and painting speak to your own life.
Facilitator: Kathy Light lives in Valparaiso, Indiana, serving her congregation at First Christian Church as a Li-censed Minister of Spiritual Care. Kathy directs retreats for her church and other groups on a variety of spiritually related topics.

Christmas and the Incarnation

The incarnation of God in the person of Christ is one of the cornerstones of the Christian faith. The Incarnation was God’s first thought for creation, not an after-thought, an event to make up for original sin. Jesus’ life was the fulfillment of God’s longing to be one with us. During our day together, we shall reflect on various church teachings about the incarnation using sources from the writer of the Gospel oust. John to the 20th century theologian Karl Rahner.
Facilitator: Sr. Cathy Schwemer is a member of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ and currently serves as the Executive Director of the North American Conference of Associates and Religious. Sr. Cathy has a Master’s Degree in Pastoral Theology from Washington Theological Union and has presented at various workshops and conferences across the United States.

Exploritas (Elderhostel)
Three times a year Elderhostelers come to the Lindenwood Retreat and Conference Center for week-long learning experiences. An Elderhosteler is a person with 55 or more years of life experience who knows that learning is a lifelong pursuit that opens minds and enriches lives. They yearn for new ideas, challenges, and experiences. They come from every walk of life to learn together.
The Elderhostel program was founded in 1974. In the summer of 1975, 220 participants enjoyed the first Elderhostel experience. Course Two -Life as Movement: What activities can reduce your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, arthritis, depression, and alzheimers? What are the benefits of daily activity? How can movement be medicine to make your life complete? We will explore how fitness can be a healing process. Taught by Mary Holm and Staff from Fitness Forum, Plymouth, Indiana.
Course Three - The Healing Power of Music: Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and also meets the needs of those with disabilities or illnesses. Music therapy interventions can be designed to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, improve communication, and promote physical rehabilitation. Japanese Felting

Create a beautiful felted wool and silk scarf in this hands-on workshop. Each participant will leave with a finished piece of wearable art designed by the participant. This Japanese felting technique is also known as laminated felting or nuno felting. Silk fabric and wool are combined to make a beautiful, one-of-a kind, lightweight scarf. This would make a lovely gift...if you can bear to part with it! No previous felting experience is necessary. Prepare to get a little wet and soapy - good clean fun!
Facilitator: Jennifer Setser is from Walkerton, Indiana. Jenny raises registered Cormo sheep and has been offering classes, fleece, handdyed rovings, felting equipment, and one-of-a-kind purses, hats, and scarves since 1994.

Jewelry Design

Winter months getting you down? Involve your creative energies with jewelry design. Learn about the basics of jewelry making, tools of the trade, and the variety of beads and patterns possible. This workshop will demonstrate basic beading techniques and instruction in making unique pieces. No previous experience is required...just your imagination! Participants will have the opportunity to make two pieces of jewelry as their own.
Facilitator: Kristyn Pondelicek, RN, BSN is an entrepreneur in jewelry design and has been beading and designing for the last five years. She serves as a nurse in the Skilled Unit at the Catherine Kasper Life Center.

A Time of Silence, A Time of Solice, A Time of Hermitage

This will be an experience for people who would like to have time to sort out how God speaks to them in their life. There will be a history of the hermitage in the Christian faith, a time to experience silence and solitude, and a time to process the experience of silence. There will be a time for private spiritual direction.

Woman’s Day: Friendship

Friendship - the word conjures different meanings and visions for each of us. How do you describe that feeling of trust, commitment, and affection of relationships between friends? The day will be fun, scripture-based, and participants will be able to attend three break out sessions offering different aspects of friendship. The break out sessions will be led by Kathy Light of Valparaiso, Indiana; Sr. Michelle Dermody, PHJC; and Dorothy Stewart of Hartford City, Indiana. The keynote speaker for the afternoon will be Nancy Schmelter of Plymouth, Indiana.
Facilitator: Nancy comes to us with 10 years of public school teaching experience and 20 years of experience as a psychotherapist working with children and families. Part of Nancy’s training and research has focused upon the importance of friendship in the healing process. Her presentation, “The Dance of Friendship,” covers the myriad ways that friendship is key to our humanity and our survival. She weaves in stories that will make us laugh and cry at the same time, while exploring the characteristics of our lifetime dance partners - our friends! Come join us and bring your friend(s)! There will be praise music to begin and end our day provided by Jack and Dawn Roose of Plymouth, Indiana.

Contadora Dolls

A Contadora doll is a doll that tells a story of our spirit life, our traditions, and our family life. It is our personal, our communal, and our ancestral story. The workshop will be a prayerful day, being consciously aware of where we have journeyed, what is, and what is beckoning our spirits. Come! This will be a time of embracing your story through doll making. Bring small pictures, charms, fabrics, and other items that tell your story.

Women’s Lenten Retreat: A Call to Die and Be Reborn with Jesus Through the Meals in Luke’s Gospel

God and Light - Water Color Retreat
April 30 - May 1, 2010

Are you a "paint by number" person, but wish for more? Are you an advanced water color artist and wish to learn a different technique? This overnight retreat is for beginner to advanced artists alike. Beginners can expect to learn water and pigment basis, about paper, design, and more. Advanced artists will have the opportunity to experience different techniques and become immersed in painting on the beautiful grounds of the PHJC Ministry Center. Come expectant and relaxed and have fun with water color and other artists.
Facilitator: Dan Hibner dabbled in art in high school and studied with an artist in the Phillipines which began a long process of learning that continues through the present. Thirty years ago Dan fell in love with water color and for the past 15 years has focused almost entirely on water color. In 2007 Dan was selected to represent Summerville, South Carolina and the Azlea Festival with an original piece.

A Brush With God:: Icon Painting Retreat

For artist and non-artists alike, join us for a spiritual exploration of icons and enter into the mystery of this ancient prayer tool by creating your own icon from start to finish. This year’s painting will be an icon of the Archangel Raphael (a healing angel.)
Facilitator: Peter Pearson of New Hope, PA, has been a student of iconography for many years and has studied under well-known iconographers.

A Retreat Journey With The Shack

We are called to be proclaimers of the Word of God in thought and in action. Throughout the ages humanity has labored to live out this Word. We shall look at Biblical passages that hve inticed and enabled them and us to be effective ministers of the Word made Flesh!
Facilitator: Fr. Jerry Schweitzer is a priest from the Diocese of Gary, Indiana. He is pastor of St. Mary’s in Otis, Sacred Heart in Wanatah, and St. Martin n LaCrosse. He is a teacher of sacred sripture, lecturer, and mission director. Fr. Jerry has led many Quiet Day of Reflection and retreats at Lindenwood.
